It IS Rocket Science!
17-01-2012

3… 2… 1… BLAST-OFF! A flurry of colours hit the air on Sunday 15th January as, one-by-one, the paper rockets a group of boarders had spent the last forty minutes designing, are launched into the atmosphere. Powered into the air with a foot pump, these projectiles travelled varied distances; the main factors were quality of design and degree of launch angle.
While Damon Chan’s and Ke Sun’s combined effort conquered the skies, being the rocket to reach the farthest distance, everyone had fun and enjoyed the sense of friendly competition.
The students were also given the option to decorate their rockets with intricate patterns or bright pictures. Prizes were given to ‘largest distance achieved’ and ‘prettiest rocket’. Matt Harris and Tom Brambell’s double-length rocket special, covered in images extracted from an old newspaper, claimed victory for the latter.
Organiser Mr. Chorley agrees it was a successful afternoon and that it has encouraged him to put on more physics/construction challenges in the future.
He says, “It was interesting to see all the different styles of rocket; some large, some small, some with fins, some without. Some even had leaves stuck to them! I say ‘Well done!’ to all the students who participated, making the competition most enjoyable to be part of.”
