Business Language Championship
02-12-2011

On 28th November 2011, Ratcliffe hosted the Business Language Championships, in which four other schools – Nottingham High School for Boys, Nottingham High School for Girls, Repton and Oundle – took part, as well as two home teams of five A-level linguists each. Ratcliffe’s year 12 students included Rishi Soni, Monica Zhang, Tom Waller, Shona Traynor and Amelia Power, and the year 13 team included Simon Gray, Ellouise Wilkie, Joe Adcock, Joe Smith and Caitlin Sheehy. The day started with an interesting talk from Quentin Rayner, the Chief Reporter at BBC East Midlands Today, on life in journalism and the importance of languages – particularly mentioning the number of occasions where he wished he could speak a foreign language. The main challenge involved creating the front cover of a supplement for a current British newspaper, written in our target language, French. This involved reporting back from press conferences which took place in various languages, reading articles, and negotiating the sale of advertising space in our language. At the end of the day we had to present our newspaper to a panel of judges, justifying our choices of news stories, our style of paper and target audience and why the judges should choose our supplement. Despite our efforts and tireless work throughout the day, neither of Ratcliffe’s teams was successful in winning, however it was a very valuable experience as we feel it helped to enhance our language skills in a business environment.
