Media

Due to the large coursework component of the subject, the Media department is always open to students to work on their coursework, or merely to improve their technical skills. Our technician, Alan Ball, is on hand to assist the students in their operation of both filming equipment and the Mac computers. In addition to the opportunities we give students to familiarise themselves with production equipment, we also seek to develop their academic understanding of the subject. To this end, we offer a Film Club to Years 7-11, where a film is nominated by a different member each week for healthy discussion and debate the following week, and a Photography Club for Years 7-9, where members develop their composition and technical skills.

We try, where possible, to provide Media-specific outside speakers at the Sixth Form Culture Club. To this end, we have provided an entertaining lecture from a visiting speaker on scripting horror films, and breaking into the script-writing business. This was very popular with students, not least because of the rather comical clips from classic slasher films on offer. However, as Ciaran Grant in Year 13 said, it also made students think seriously ‘about getting into the film production business.’

Finally the Media Department also recruits a team of School Photographers from the Sixth Form who are responsible for photographing major events at the college, from sports fixtures to religious celebrations. These are an invaluable team of students who provide an important service for the school.
